Storytelling for marketing

Kamishibai

For this project, I made a series of 8 watercolour illustrated panels for the Japanese offshore logistics company, East Winds Asia, to help narrate their company’s vision and idea of monopile logistics in a traditional Japanese form of children’s storytelling in a traveling wooden cabinet, the Kamishibai.

While it is very common to use a powerpoint or keynote presentation to pitch a company's idea or vision, what makes this project truly unique is that a physical wooden cabinet with artistic slides and a telling story is reminiscent of a forgotten childhood. This nostalgia evokes a stronger sense of attachment for the product and becomes a memorable experience which they carry beyond the conference room.

Because of the story-like nature of the Kamishibai itself,  watercolour was chosen as the artistic medium; the blue accents of the water contrasting with yellow of the monopiles. It makes the technical aspects of the process standout in this dreamy setting. Elements like concentric waves and the mythical bird strengthen the connection to Japanese culture and emphasise that traditions will always find roots even in modern technologies.

The Red Crested Crane bird (which symbolises good fortune and longevity in traditional Japanese culture ) dons the role of an operations manager in the story, supervising the monopile logistic operations at every step from manufacturing to installation.
She also wears a yellow hard-hat to prioritise safety conditions on site.
